Scientists have only recently started to unravel the secrets of the marine plants and animals that live in the deeper waters off South Africa. Remarkable features such as canyons and seamounts and the deeper edges of the continental shelf provide homes for otherworldy creatures. These MPAs ensure that offshore ecosystems continue to sustain our fisheries, buffer us from climate change and inspire us to further explore the secrets that lie beneath our blue horizon.
